The gender perspective in sustainable urban planning

    Get PDF
As for any other discipline, urban planning can only be considered sustainable if it combines care for the environment with the satisfaction of social needs and economic balance. Given that women make up almost 50% of the world's population, urban planning that neglects women’s needs is not sustainable. Numerous studies show that mobility patterns vary according to gender and are linked to people’s daily activities, which also depend, among others, on the economic and educational level. The other way round, limited mobility opportunities lead to some women’s restricted access to particular activities. This work aims to briefly explain existing inequalities and their potential solutions under different boundary conditions.

This article starts with a discussion of memory and forgetfulness in the history of archaeology. As obituaries are almost exclusively reserved to university professors and museum curators, this pushes most archaeology practitioners to oblivion. This essay aims to recover the memory of one of the latter, Francisco Benítez Mellado (1883-1962). This Córdoba-born archaeologist was trained as an artist painter by José García Ramos and the well-known Joaquín Sorolla. In 1915, however, he became a technician responsible for drawing both the material of many of the key prehistoric sites excavated in the first half of the 20th century and most of the major discoveries of prehistoric cave and rock art published by the major prehistorians at the time in Spain

    Get PDF
[eng] This article examines the roots of the first textbooks produced in Cambridge on European prehistory. The first dedicated lecturer in prehistoric archaeology in Britain, Miles Burkitt, authored these textbooks. Two types of information, archival and printed sources, will be used as the basis for the analysis. A description will be given of the events that made Burkitt´s presence in Spain possible, as a companion of the French archaeologist Henri Breuil, and the program and itinerary they followed in 1913 and 1914 will be detailed. The last section of the article will explore the ways in which Burkitt subsequently translated the knowledge he acquired in his fieldwork into the textbooks that would be used by many generations of Cambridge students.[spa] El presente artículo analiza los orígenes de los primeros libros sobre prehistoria europea producidos en Cambridge escritos por el primer profesor de arqueología prehistórica en Gran Bretaña, Miles Burkitt.

This dossier is one of the outcomes of the third and final workshop of the European JPI-JHEP Heritage Values Network (H@V) project (www.heritagevalues.net/), partly financed by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness through an "I+D+i Orientada a los retos de la sociedad" project entitled "La Red de los Valores del Patrimonio" (Ref PCIN-2013-036). This workshop was held at the University of Barcelona from 19 to 21 February 2015. The three-day event, inaugurated by Joan Pluma, then the General Director of Archives, Libraries, Museums and Heritage of the Government of Catalonia (Generalitat de Catalunya), included a combination of papers, round tables, activities, discussions and debates. The discussion topic was "Heritage Values and the Public" and it was attended by a multi-disciplinary group of more than fifty established professionals and student volunteers. From the five discussion lines during the workshop − Inclusivity; Participatory and Sustainable Heritage; Virtual Heritage, Heritage Values and the Public; Tourism; and World Heritage (WH) − this dossier is a compilation of a selection of the contributions to the last of thes

Autonomous vehicles: theoretical and practical challenges

    Get PDF
Parte do número especial XIII Conference on Transport Engineering (CIT 2018)[Abstract:] Autonomous driving is expected to revolutionize road traffic attenuating current externalities, especially accidents and congestion. Carmakers, researchers and administrations have been working on autonomous driving for years and significant progress has been made. However, the doubts and challenges to overcome are still huge, as the implementation of an autonomous driving environment encompasses not only complex automotive technology, but also human behavior, ethics, traffic management strategies, policies, liability, etc. As a result, carmakers do not expect to commercially launch fully driverless vehicles in the short-term. From the technical perspective, the unequivocal detection of obstacles at high speeds and long distances is one of the greatest difficulties to face. Regarding traffic management strategies, all approaches share the vision that vehicles should behave cooperatively. General V2V cooperation and platooning are options being discussed, both with multiple variants. Various strategies, built from different standpoints, are being designed and validated using simulation. Besides, legal issues have already been arisen in the context of highly-automated driving. They range from the need for special driving licenses to much more intricate topics like liability in the event of an accident or privacy issues. All these legal and ethical concerns could hinder the spread of autonomous vehicles once technologically feasible. This paper provides an overview of the current state of the art in the key aspects of autonomous driving. Based on the information received in situ from top research centers in the field and on a literature review, authors highlight the most important advances and findings reached so far, discuss different approaches regarding autonomous traffic and propose a framework for future research.

// This article describes the results of the investigation “Developing Communicative Intercultural Competence in Medical Postgraduate Education in Cuba through English”, a master´s degree thesis whose aim was to design a postgraduate course of English for Specific Purposes which would focus on the development of the communicative competence of doctors going to health missions in English-speaking countries or where English is spoken as a lingua franca. This course is based on Developmental Pedagogy, the Communicative Approach and Task-Based Learning. It emphasizes cultural and important intercultural issues to be kept in mind during doctor-patient interviews, doctor-doctor relationships and doctor-family exchanges in a professional context so as to make it possible to establish cultural differences and similarities between the students´ culture and the foreign country´s culture This is an exploratory investigation with a fundamentally quantitative focus using resources of the qualitative one. This design is a curricular document with all its didactic components, aimed at the development of intercultural communicative competence that responds to the current needs of the participants

Multilevel factor models: Identification of three-level model parameters for the study of regional development in Argentina

Based on a theoretical-social model which states that Communication and Information Technologies (CITs) infuence the human development, due to the impact they have on economic growth, this work explores the relationship between the social, economic and technological dimensions or constructs, in aprovince, Córdoba, of Argentina. Confirmatory common framework (GLLAMMs, Skrondal & Rabe-Hesketh, 2004) was performed considering three level modeling. This approach allowed us to identify some indicators that measure constructs and help characterize the level of development of our region using hierarchical information. Since the estimation method was based on full information maximum likelihood, we devoted special attention to the identifiability of the parameters. Two constructs to describe the socioeconomic and technological (SET) development at the district level were obtained. Due to correlation between the two latent variables at department level was near one, a new common factor model containing only one dimension was appropriate.Fil: Díaz, María del Pilar.
